and your book deals
My electric just came back on.
For an hour and a half, it was out. Not a long time—unless it was the exact time I wanted to write this newsletter. Which I did.
I’m very good at find a way to get on the Internet, but this time I tried everything and even my Hot Spot wasn’t working.
It is a reality check about just how much I rely on electricity—and the Internet specifically for my business.
There is no doubt that the Internet has made the many jobs of an Indie author easier, or even possible. I cannot imagine the great lengths a person must have went to in the ‘old days’ to publish a book.
Today, when my electric is working, once I’ve uploaded the manuscript and filled in three pages of information, it is merely the press of a button and my book is whisked up to that big company in the cloud. Within hours, I have a newly published book on the Internet.
Before that, as I write the book, I used all kinds of programs (writing, editing, formatting, and more)—most of which are in the cloud so it doesn’t take so much room on my computer.
After a book is published, I share in promos to promote the book. I apply for them online, they are shown online, and readers pick from the choices online before they are downloaded onto their device.
I also run ads through Facebook and Amazon primarily—also created and shown online.
Without the Internet, I do not have a business.
However, I can write without the Internet. And that is the most important, and fun, part of being an author.
I back up all my chapters with a printed copy. So, I can use those as a starting point on my next chapter. I can write all night with pen and paper even if I lose all electric.
Thankfully, the outage was only for a short time. But it’s a reminder for me to backup everything I can!

Last year much of Whidbey Island was completely without communications (except maybe for satellite phones) for several hours. We had electric and water, but all of Whidbey Island was without cable, cell, and landline phone services. Many stores could not do business, It was strange. Some cell phone store workers had to stand outside their locked stores to fend off irate customers. I don't know if you can make a good story out of this. Whidbey Island is the largest island in the continental US, since Long Island is not legally considered an island any more. Water, power, and communications are all provided over a bridge that is over 85 years old. This is the only bridge to the island. There is ferry service, if the weather permits.
