New Novels, Book Advertising, and the Little Orange Tag

What Used to be Arkansas, book 2 in the What Used to be Series, released on November 7—just about a month ago. During that time, it has spent a good portion of its time with this little orange tag beside it.
See that little thing? It say # 1 New Release! That means, as of that moment, it is the # 1 New Release in its category.
I can’t even tell you how excited I was to see that!
Amazon doesn’t let authors know if they have received a tag—at least that is what I’ve heard and experienced so far. There is no congratulatory email. Nothing. A person will only see the tag if they happen to click on the book’s page at the right time.
After seeing it that first time, I checked that book’s page—a lot. lol.
I’m not sure if any of my other books ever had that, or the other elusive orange tag—# 1 Bestseller. I still have a shot at the Bestseller as that can happen at any point in a novel’s life. The New Release opportunity only happens for a short time—30 days, I’ve been told.
Will these tags help me sell books?
Maybe. Maybe not. If—as a reader—I’m browsing, I take it in consideration. But, of course, there are other considerations as well. So, yeah, maybe it will help sell more books. But overall, it is a little sign that says, “Hey, people like this!”
And that is just the pick-me-up a new author needs when they’ve launched a new book. Because letting them go into the big, wide world can be really scary. And most authors will take any kind of kudos they can get.

Advertising
Some people have wondered how I advertise my books. I rotate things depending on the time of the year and how well Facebook is treating me.
For a long time, I used mostly Facebook Ads. But lately, I haven’t gotten much return on them. So about a month ago, I turned them off.
I do have a tiny ad of around three dollars a day on Amazon Ads. Mainly for the low to no cost impressions (showing my ad) they give me.
As of right now, I’m mainly using free promos with Bookfunnel and StoryOriginApp with a few paid ones thrown in. And yes, my book sales have gone down. But honestly, not much more than the amount of money I spent on ads anyway. And I have none of the horrible ad hassle I had before.
Free promos are a great way for a new author like myself, or any other author, to reach new readers. It’s the way I started when I had absolutely no money to spend on—well, anything. And it’s a way authors can help each other while helping themselves. Get 20-50 authors sharing a promo and that is a lot of people who are seeing our books. So never discount the free promo.

The House by the Ocean by Ivory Fields
I’m taking a little break from post-apocalyptic and reading something calming. It is about a women and her teenage daughter who are left an inheritance from a grandmother they never knew. Once they move across the country to the new property, they learn some pretty deep family secrets.
There is a little mystery, a couple of missing people, and a tiny bit of romance. And it has hundreds of good reviews.
It’s an easy read with each book in the series being only 50-60 pages long, which is about forty-five minutes to one and a half hours to read. I like that. It fits into my schedule very nicely. Each book is only 99c. It is also in Kindle Unlimited.
