I hope you’re enjoying the short story about Albert’s beginnings.
I’m going on a little journey with this too because even though I’ve written some about Albert, it hasn’t been much. So to come up with his initial motivations and how he gets his hands on different experiments is exciting for me too.
Below is Part 3 of the story. At the bottom of the newsletter are LOTS of Book Deals and in the middle are the answers to the last survey.
In addition, there is no pressure for anyone, but I also know many like to help others when they are able. We have a fellow reader who has been struggling with cancer since 2014, which has led to a host of medical problems. If you choose to help, any funds will go toward funding her treatment, according to her GoFundMe page. I will link it here: https://gofund.me/73c8acbd
Happy reading,
Maira :)
What Used To Be series: Albert Anderson PhD (Part 3)

Previously: Albert is with the military in a secret underground bunker eagerly watching the beginning of The Fall. He begins to see all his plans for any experiments that make it to earth crumble when the Captain orders the larger debris to be broken up.
Part 3:
He had to act fast. His mind tumbled with things he wanted to say aloud. How could they do this? How could they be so blind to the potential that lay within those space stations? But he couldn’t say a word or to be sure the tough-looking captain would have him thrown in the brig or whatever passed for a prison in this underground military refuge.
Albert ground his teeth and put his hands on the back of a chair in front of him, leaning into it and staring at the floor. He ordered his normally brilliant mind to think. He couldn’t let the government destroy everything he had been waiting for. This debris storm was his only chance to get his hands on the experiments that would change the world, to mold it into something better.
He looked back at the screens, watching as the missiles raced toward what was left of the precious space station, ready to destroy it.
A random thought flashed through his mind. He shot upright, letting go of the chair. He knew exactly what he needed to do.
He rushed back to his lab, flinging open the door. Quickly, he grabbed his coat and a flash drive containing all the information he needed to ensure the success of his plan. It was a long shot, the thing barely worked, but the only one he had.
His secret project. For months he’d kept it under wraps, afraid it’d be taken away from him. But they couldn’t take it away now.
Albert ran to the back of the room and down a short block hallway. The military had used this space as a dusty catch-all. They had filled it with stuff and never returned. So it had become the perfect place to keep his secret project.
He stopped beside a shrouded object. It was almost as tall as him and as wide as the two wooden pallets that held it off the floor. Reaching out, he grabbed the material covering it and yanked it off. Eyes shining, he once again admired his metal creation, a device that allowed him to transport objects from one place to another in an instant.
It was dangerous. He’d had little time to experiment with it and there were so many variables.
But it was his only hope.
With shaking hands, Albert plugged the flash drive into his computer, which was connected to the transporter, and began to work, typing furiously as the sound of explosions echoed through the underground facility.
Finally, he was ready. He’d had to compensate for so many factors. No doubt the space station was gone, but the debris from it, that he could still save. Maybe.
Maybe nothing would return to him. But he had to try.
He switched on the machine and watched as the energy built up to a high crescendo. The room began to shake as the machine hummed, sparks flying out of it. Albert closed his eyes and whispered a prayer before hitting the button to activate the device. He imagined the beam of light the items would travel on, though in reality, the beam was invisible.
He stared through the tiny thick-paned window to the metal shelves into the device. He willed the empty rack to fill.
When something appeared, he wouldn’t believe it. Blinking several times, he glanced away and back again.
The little container was small, almost too tiny to see. Albert leaned in closer, pressing his nose against the glass, and recognized it as one of the embryo samples he’d seen a picture of.
Another, then another sample appeared. Relief washed over him and he breathed easier.
After a few minutes, they stopped appearing and he shut off the machine.
All was not lost.
He’d rescued the experiments he needed to change the world. Now he had to figure out how to keep them safe and hidden from the government.
Albert smiled as he thought of all the possibilities. With these experiments, he could make sure the future of humankind would be better than ever before.
And no one would ever know his secret.

Survey
Here are the answers to the last survey! The question was": I prefer book deals that are 1) books on sale or 2) books in Kindle Unlimited.
The answer sort of surprised me. I had assumed there would be more KU readers. But I’ll keep these results in mind as I search for book deals.
But, if you are a KU reader, don’t worry. I’ll still be showing KU promos. I’m a Kindle Unlimited reader myself, so I’m always looking for those.
If you’re not a KU reader, I just would like to mention that many times books in KU are often on sale. So, it’s worth checking out those promos too. When you click on the books, it takes you straight to Amazon. You don’t have to give your email to see the prices or buy the book.
