What Used To Be series: Albert Anderson PhD (Part 8)

Previously: Albert is with the military in a secret underground bunker eagerly watching the beginning of The Fall. He begins to see all his plans for any experiments that make it to earth crumble when the Captain orders the larger debris to be broken up. In desperation, he uses his secret experiment—a transporter—to move some of the experiments from space to his lab. It was a one-in-a-billion shot, but it worked.

Knowing there are more experiments to find, Albert convinces two soldiers to join him in a search for more experimental boxes. Outside the compound, Albert finds more science experiments and an injured woman. He takes the woman to his lab.

Part 8:

Albert waited for what seemed like hours before the woman stirred. Her moans turned to whimpers, and then she opened her eyes.

Shock covered her face when she realized where she was. Looking around, she spotted Albert. “What have you done?”

It was a question that had many answers, but Albert focused on her accommodations. “It was just a precaution. Just for a little while.”

She pushed herself up off the floor. The cage was tall enough that she had to lower her head when standing.

“How do you feel?” he asked.

“I’m not telling you anything!”

Albert crossed his arms. “You don’t have to. But I’ll keep you in there until you do.”

She debated the choices and quickly came to a conclusion. “I feel a new . . . energy coursing through me.”

“It worked then,” Albert said, awe in his voice. “You’re stronger than ever before. You must be able to tell.”

“Am I? How do I test that?”

“Tell me more while I consider that.” Albert picked up a pencil and paper and began scribbling down everything she said.

“It’s like a power—as if electricity ran through my blood. It makes me feel capable of doing things I never thought possible. Like bending the bars of this cage.” She put her hands on the metal.

“You can try. Even though I feel you will be stronger than another human, I don’t think you’ll be stronger than a chimpanzee.”

She gave him a confused look.

“It’s what the cage is for. Those animals are more than twice as strong as the average human male. As a female, I’m afraid you’re still low on that strength meter.”

Anger contorted her face. “I hate you.”

“And yet, you were just telling me how amazing you feel,” Albert said with a chuckle.

She put her hands on the bars and curled her fingers around them. She tried to shake them, but they stayed firm. After sighing and turning away, she said, “I also feel this was a terrible mistake. As though something horrible is going to happen to me.” She ran a hand over her face. “What have you done to me?”

“I’ve given you a gift,” Albert said, eyes shining with excitement. “A gift that will allow you to survive in this harsh new world. You’ll be able to protect yourself and those around you.”

“You’re a monster. This is what you do to me! Like I’m some sort of lab rat.”

“You mustn’t be upset about that. It isn’t personal. I would’ve treated anyone else I found the same way.”

Her eyes filled with a newfound determination, blazing like fire. She flexed her fingers as if she could feel the new strength in them.

“You’ve made a mistake,” she said, her voice low and dangerous.
