Hello!
Now that we’re back to normal life, I’ve had time to add to Albert’s story. It is starting to wind down. I plan on 2-3 more parts. Part Nine is below.
I hope you’re having a nice winter so far. I have to say that we are. Other than one big dump of snow, we only had a dusting here and there. This suits me just fine as snow is not as exciting for me as it once was. lol.
We’ve had some chaos here over the last few weeks. Our furnace went out—completely broke. Fortunately, we have a friend who does heating and cooling for a living so he was able to give us a good price on a new everything. Anyone who has needed to replace a furnace knows how much that can help.
My husband hit a deer. He was fine but the car was not. The body shop places around here are piled with cars waiting to be fixed. It’s been waiting its turn for weeks and the latest we've been told is to check on it in a few more days. It seems the deer have been out in full force this year.
In the end, though, we have a newer, more efficient furnace. And will, hopefully, have our beautiful car back soon. lol. So I can’t complain too much.
Happy Reading,
Maira :)
What Used To Be series: Albert Anderson PhD (Part 8)

Previously: Albert is with the military in a secret underground bunker eagerly watching the beginning of The Fall. He begins to see all his plans for any experiments that make it to earth crumble when the Captain orders the larger debris to be broken up. In desperation, he uses his secret experiment—a transporter—to move some of the experiments from space to his lab. It was a one-in-a-billion shot, but it worked.
Knowing there are more experiments to find, Albert convinces two soldiers to join him in a search for more experimental boxes. Outside the compound, Albert finds more science experiments and an injured woman. He takes the woman to his lab. The scientist injects her with his super vaccine. She wakes up.
Part 9:
Albert backed up. He’d pushed the woman too far. It was clear she wished him harm.
“I’m sorry,” he said, holding his hands up in surrender. “I was wrong to do what I did. If you promise not to hurt me, I’ll let you go.”
The woman glared at him. “I want to kill you for what you’ve done. But I’m still too civilized to do that.”
She was silent as he unlocked the cage and stepped back.
Albert’s hand hovered over a drawer that held a cattle prod he’d used on animal test subjects.
The woman hesitated for a moment, then stepped out of the cage. She stared at him as if unsure he was really letting her go.
She lunged at him.
Albert frantically scrabbled for the cattle prod. Pulling open the drawer and fumbling for it as he watched her coming at him.
Unable to find it, Albert stumbled backward, tripping over a piece of equipment. She body-slammed him to the floor.
Terrified, he pleaded, “Please. Don’t hurt me.”
“I said I wouldn’t kill you. I didn’t say I wouldn’t make you pay.”
The woman hesitated, and Albert broke free. “Since you like to hear all about the transition, I will tell you this. I feel like I’m losing control of myself. Like I’m losing my mind.”
He scrambled to his feet, his eyes wild with fear. “We need to reverse the effects,” he said, his voice urgent. “We can’t let it consume you completely.”
She shook her head. “I’ve decided maybe you’re correct. If this world is going to get as crazy as you believe it will, maybe this is the edge I need to survive.”
Albert ran to his desk and frantically searched through his notes, looking for some way to reverse the effects of the serum. As he worked, he became acutely aware of the woman’s presence behind him, her breath hot and ragged on the back of his neck.
“I said no.” The woman ripped his notes from his hand, scattering them across the floor.
“But I can help you!” Albert insisted.
“That’s what you said when you started this,” she said, sneering at him.
The woman put a hand in the middle of Albert’s chest and pushed.
He stumbled, but he managed to stay on his feet. “Okay. I’ll let you out. Just don’t touch me again.”
When she seemed to calm down, he added, “I’m sure you’re hungry and thirsty. I have a tray of food on that table of there. You’re welcome to take it with you.”
The woman eyed him suspiciously but glanced at the food a couple of times.
Albert kept her in his line of sight as he made a show of electronically unlocking the door.
She downed the sandwich in a few bites and stuck an apple and pudding cup into her pockets. Last, she guzzled the soda.
Albert smiled.
